Thessaloniki International Airport "Makedonia" (SKG) is the main airport for Halkidiki, and every arrival continues by road because the peninsula has no airport of its own. That single fact shapes the whole journey: what you need to plan is not a flight connection but a drive, and how long that drive takes depends almost entirely on where in Halkidiki you are staying.

Halkidiki is a large region rather than a single destination. Northern Halkidiki around Nea Moudania and Gerakini is close to the airport. Kassandra, the western leg, runs south for tens of kilometres. Sithonia, the middle leg, is further still and reached by a slower coastal road. The wider Mount Athos and Ouranoupoli area sits east again. Any guide that gives one distance and one transfer time for "Halkidiki" is giving you a number that will be wrong for most travellers.

Where is Thessaloniki Airport?

SKG lies southeast of Thessaloniki, on the coast near Thermi. Its position is convenient for Halkidiki: you leave the terminal and join the road network heading south and east, without needing to cross the city. That is why a drive to northern Halkidiki can be shorter than many travellers expect, while the far ends of the peninsula still involve a substantial road journey.

How far is Halkidiki from Thessaloniki Airport?

The table below gives approximate road distances and typical journey ranges from SKG. Treat every figure as indicative: traffic, roadworks, the exact pickup point inside the airport, hotel access roads and any stop along the way all affect the real duration.

Resort names can be misleading about location. Ikos Oceania is in Nea Moudania and Ikos Olivia is in Gerakini, both in northern Halkidiki. Sani Resort is in the Sani area of Kassandra, Domes Noruz Kassandra is in Hanioti, and Alia Palace sits above Pefkochori. Miraggio is near Paliouri and Kanistro at the southern tip of Kassandra, while Ouranoupoli is in neither Kassandra nor Sithonia — it is on the third leg, towards Mount Athos.

Transport options from SKG Airport to Halkidiki

Four realistic options exist, and each suits a different kind of traveller. None of them is universally right.

Pre-booked private transfer

A private transfer is arranged before you fly, which means the vehicle, the pickup and the destination are all known in advance. It suits families, groups, late arrivals and properties that sit away from bus routes, where the last few kilometres would otherwise be the hardest part of the trip.

What a private transfer does not automatically do is cost less than a taxi. Whether it does depends on the route, the time and the vehicle you need, so compare the actual quote against the fare you would be charged rather than assuming either direction.

Airport taxi

Licensed taxis wait at the official rank outside arrivals and are a legitimate, regulated way to travel. The important detail for Halkidiki is that these are long-distance journeys well outside central Thessaloniki, so the regulated airport to city-centre flat fare does not apply to them.

For a long-distance trip the cost can depend on the applicable regulated tariff, the route, the time of day and any lawful supplements. Confirm with the driver how the fare will be calculated before you set off, especially for journeys to the southern parts of the peninsula.

Public bus and KTEL Halkidikis

Thessaloniki Airport is served by local bus connections rather than by resort coaches. Current airport information lists lines 1X and 1N towards the city centre and the KTEL Makedonia intercity terminal, line 79 towards the IKEA area in the east, and line 2X towards the Nea Elvetia metro transfer station. The 1N is the night service on that corridor.

None of these is a direct resort bus. Travelling to Halkidiki by public transport generally means reaching the appropriate KTEL Halkidikis connection, taking the intercity bus towards your area, and then covering the final stretch from the bus stop to your accommodation by taxi or on foot. Which connection you need depends on your destination and on the current timetable, and seasonal or daily schedules change.

Public transport can be economical for solo travellers with light luggage and a flexible schedule. It tends to be less practical for late arrivals, families with children, several large suitcases, or hotels some distance from the nearest stop. Always verify current routes, connections and tickets directly with the operators before you build a plan around them.

Rental car

A rental car makes sense if you intend to make several independent trips — beach-hopping across Kassandra, day trips into Sithonia, or inland villages. Before booking, check the licence requirements, the insurance excess, the deposit held on your card and the fuel policy, and remember that parking in popular villages is genuinely difficult in July and August.

One common myth is worth clearing up: the normal road route from SKG to Halkidiki does not generally involve motorway tolls, so tolls are not an unavoidable extra cost of driving there. We do not arrange car rental ourselves — if you decide to drive, book directly with a rental company.

Which option is best for different travellers?

Choosing the correct vehicle

Our fleet is organised by capacity rather than by badge. A sedan such as a Mercedes E-Class or similar carries up to 3 passengers with 3 suitcases, and the estate T-Model version takes up to 4 passengers with extra luggage room. A minivan — Mercedes Vito or similar — covers up to 8 passengers, while the Minivan Business V-Class is a higher-specification option for up to 7. Passenger capacity and practical capacity are not the same thing. A vehicle rated for the number of people in your party may still be tight once large suitcases, pushchairs, golf bags or ski equipment are added, which is why the booking form asks separately about adults, children, suitcases and oversized items. Enter the real numbers and the form will only offer vehicles that genuinely fit. Specific models are indicated as "or similar" — the class you book is what is guaranteed, not a particular car.

How airport pickup works

• Book with the correct date, scheduled landing time and official flight number.
• Enter the exact destination — the hotel, villa or apartment name, and which property inside a large resort.
• Give a reachable mobile or WhatsApp number that you will have switched on when you land.
• Confirm the number of passengers and suitcases, and note any child seat or oversized item.
• Follow the pickup instructions sent with your booking confirmation; your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign.
• Contact us straight away if your flight, arrival time or party details change.

We monitor your flight in real time, and free waiting time of up to 60 minutes after landing is included for airport pickups, with 15 minutes at other pickup points. Additional waiting time may be charged. If your flight is cancelled or heavily delayed, contact us immediately — we reschedule at no extra cost or refund in full.

Booking a return transfer to SKG

Plan the return around the airport, not around the hotel. As a general rule, be at the terminal at least two hours before departure, or earlier if your airline asks for more, and then add the full road journey plus an allowance for traffic on top of that.

In practice that means a pickup from southern Kassandra or Sithonia on an August weekend can be three and a half to four hours before your flight. We can suggest a pickup time based on your route, but you should always check your airline's own check-in and boarding requirements and tell us if they need more margin.
