Arriving at Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" (SKG) and trying to work out what your ride will cost is harder than it should be, mostly because four different services are usually described with the same word. A taxi taken from the official rank, a licensed taxi booked in advance, a pre-booked private transfer and a larger pre-booked minivan, minibus or coach are not the same product, and they do not share the same booking or pricing arrangements. This guide separates them clearly so you can compare like with like.

Official taxi fare from Thessaloniki Airport to the city centre

Thessaloniki operates a regulated flat fare for the defined route between the airport and the city centre. As published for August 2026, that fare is €25 for daytime journeys between 05:00 and 24:00, and €35 for night journeys between 00:00 and 05:00. The figures are set by regulation rather than by the individual driver, and they are displayed at the official rank outside arrivals.

What matters just as much is what this fare does not cover. It applies to the specific airport–city-centre route inside the defined area. It does not automatically extend to every suburb, to the KTEL terminals, to addresses on the outskirts, or to any destination in Halkidiki. If your address sits outside that zone, the journey is priced differently and you should confirm the calculation method before departure.

Regulated taxi tariffs can be revised. Travellers should check the current posted information at the official rank, or confirm how the fare will be calculated, before starting the journey.

This official rank fare should not be confused with our own pre-booked city transfer price, which is a separate commercial service quoted per vehicle in the booking form. The two are simply different ways of buying a ride into town.

How the taxi meter works

Outside the flat-fare route, Greek taxis charge using a meter, and the total is built from several separate elements: an initial meter fare, a minimum journey charge, a per-kilometre rate that changes between the day and night or out-of-city tariff, and specific supplements that may lawfully apply, such as an airport supplement, heavy-luggage items, a telephone or app booking fee, and waiting time.

Two of these are often confused. The meter start is the amount already showing when the journey begins; the minimum charge is the least you will pay for a completed trip even if the metered total comes to less. On a short hop the minimum charge is what you actually settle, which is why very short rides can feel disproportionately expensive.

Halkidiki journeys sit entirely outside the Thessaloniki city-centre flat-fare route, so the city price tells you nothing useful about them. What you pay depends on the destination, the distance actually driven, which tariff applies at the time of travel, the route taken and any lawful supplements.

The differences between areas are large. Kassandra, Sithonia and the Ouranoupoli area are separated by tens of kilometres, so a figure quoted for Nea Moudania cannot be stretched to Pefkochori, Sani, Nikiti, Sarti or Ouranoupoli. If you take a taxi from the rank, ask how the fare will be calculated before you leave the airport. If you pre-book a private transfer, the price and conditions are shown and confirmed as part of the booking.
