Hanioti is one of the busiest seaside villages on the eastern side of the Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki. It is compact enough to explore on foot, but large enough to hold a real village centre: a central square, pedestrian streets lined with shops and tavernas, bars that fill up after dinner, and a beachfront that most accommodation can reach easily. If you want a holiday base with services, food options and a sea view without renting a car for every outing, Hanioti is a sensible choice. You will also see the village written as Chaniotis on some maps, road signs and booking listings — it is the same place.

Where is Hanioti?

Hanioti sits on the eastern coast of Kassandra, facing the Toroneos Gulf. Travelling down the eastern coastal road from the north, you pass Polychrono first and then reach Hanioti; continuing in the same direction, southeast, brings you to Pefkochori. In other words, Hanioti lies southeast of Polychrono and northwest of Pefkochori. Further southeast the peninsula narrows towards Paliouri and the Glarokavos area, while the northern part of Kassandra — Kallithea, Afitos and Kryopigi — is reached by driving back up the coast.

The village beach runs along the seafront and is easy to reach from the centre, which is a large part of Hanioti's appeal. Sections differ: some stretches are organised with sunbeds and beach service in season, others are simply open sand where you can lay a towel. Facilities such as sunbeds, showers or watersports are seasonal and can change from year to year, so treat what you read online — including this guide — as a starting point rather than a promise. Conditions also vary with the weather; a breezy afternoon on the Toroneos Gulf feels very different from a still morning.

Do not assume every coastal spot near the village is walkable from your hotel. Distances that look short on a map often involve main roads without continuous pavement. If you are staying at the edge of the village or on higher ground, check with your property how they recommend reaching the beach. Glarokavos, often mentioned in the same breath as Hanioti, is a separate beach and lagoon area beyond Pefkochori, reached by road towards Paliouri — it is a drive, not a stroll.

Things to do in Hanioti

• Walk around the central square and the pedestrian streets in the early evening, when the village is at its liveliest.
• Visit the beachfront early in the morning for a calm swim, or late in the day when the light softens.
• Explore Pefkochori, the next village southeast, for a change of scene and a different set of restaurants.
• Take an evening trip to Afitos in northern Kassandra for stone streets and sea views.
• Combine the inland village of Agia Paraskevi with the coastal settlement of Loutra for a slower, less touristic afternoon.
• Plan a day trip to Thessaloniki for the waterfront, museums and city food.
• Arrange a private excursion or transfer to another part of Kassandra if you would rather not drive.

Afitos for an evening excursion

Afitos is a separate traditional village on the northern part of Kassandra, not a neighbourhood of Hanioti. It is known for its stone architecture, cobbled lanes and open views over the Toroneos Gulf, and it is one of the few places on the peninsula that feels equally worth visiting in June and in October. Most visitors go in the late afternoon, walk the lanes before sunset and stay for dinner. Driving time depends on season and traffic, so plan the evening loosely rather than to the minute.

Agia Paraskevi and Loutra

These two are often confused. Agia Paraskevi is a traditional inland village on the southern half of Kassandra, with a village square and a quieter, year-round character. Loutra — full name Loutra Agia Paraskevi — is the coastal settlement below it, known for sea views and its long association with thermal springs. Both are separate from Hanioti and require road transport.

If you make the drive, two places are worth knowing about. Villa Stasa Sea Restaurant is in Loutra Agia Paraskevi, in a cliffside setting associated with sea views, sunsets, seafood and Greek cuisine. Archontiko is in Agia Paraskevi village, near the village centre, and is known primarily as a meat-focused restaurant with Greek dishes and a traditional atmosphere. They offer two genuinely different evenings — coastal seafood and sunset light on one side, village square and grilled meat on the other. Check current opening times directly with each business before setting out, and reserve ahead in busy periods; a specific table or view cannot be guaranteed.

Where to eat in Hanioti

Hanioti has a dense concentration of tavernas, seafood places, casual grills, pizzerias and cafés, most of them within a few minutes of the square. Rather than ranking them, it is more useful to know how the scene works: a large share of venues are seasonal, menus and ownership change, and the same street can feel completely different in June and in August. Names that come up regularly among visitors and locals include Zikas, To Ellinikon, Bakalis and Capari — Bakalis is generally associated with Greek, Mediterranean and seafood-oriented cooking, and Capari with a central, casual style of dining including pizza and Mediterranean dishes. Beyond these, a significant part of the local market is apartments, studios and suites rented directly or through booking platforms.

Two practical points. First, check the property type before booking: apartments, studios and suites are not the same product as a full-service hotel, and reception hours differ. Second, confirm the star category and any brand affiliation on the property's own official channels rather than on third-party listings, which are often out of date. Thessaloniki Airport to Hanioti

The road distance from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) to Hanioti is approximately 90–95 km, and a typical drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes depending on traffic and your exact address. On July and August weekends, when arrivals and departures across Halkidiki peak, the same route can take noticeably longer, so build in a margin for your return flight.

A private transfer takes you directly from the terminal to your accommodation, which matters if you land late, travel with children or carry a lot of luggage. Public transport is possible but usually involves connections and an additional leg between the drop-off point and your property. A rental car makes sense if you plan to explore independently for most of your stay.
