Why Meteora deserves a full day
Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site: enormous sandstone pillars rising above the town of Kalambaka, crowned by Byzantine monasteries built from the 14th century onwards. Six monasteries are still active and open to visitors.
From Thessaloniki the drive is about 3 hours via the Egnatia, PATHE and E65 motorways. With a private vehicle you can leave early, arrive ahead of the coach tours, and still have time for two or three monasteries, the panoramic viewpoints and an unhurried lunch in Kalambaka or Kastraki.
The six monasteries
Great Meteoron (Megalo Meteoro)
The largest and oldest, founded in the 14th c. About 300 steps; museum, old kitchen and refectory.
Varlaam
Second largest, famous frescoes and the original rope-and-net lifting tower.
Roussanou (St. Barbara)
The most photogenic — the building covers the whole rock. Easiest access, few steps.
St. Nicholas Anapafsas
Small and vertical, with 16th c. frescoes by the Cretan painter Theophanis.
Holy Trinity (Agia Triada)
The James Bond monastery from 'For Your Eyes Only'. 140 steps carved in the rock.
St. Stephen
A nunnery reached by a small bridge — no climbing, ideal for limited mobility.
Each monastery closes on a different day of the week and hours change between summer and winter. We confirm the plan with you the day before.
How the day looks
- 07:00 — Pickup from your hotel, SKG airport or a Halkidiki resort.
- 08:30 — Short coffee stop on the way (Katerini or Larissa).
- 10:00 — Arrival in Kalambaka, first stop at a panoramic viewpoint for photos.
- 10:30–14:00 — Visit 2–3 monasteries; your driver waits at each entrance.
- 14:00 — Lunch at a traditional taverna in Kalambaka or Kastraki.
- 15:30 — Final viewpoint stop, then the return drive.
- 18:30–19:00 — Back at your pickup point.
The schedule is indicative and adapts to monastery opening hours and to your own pace.

The price is per vehicle and covers fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's time for the whole day. Pickups from Halkidiki are priced according to distance.

Good to know before you go
Covered shoulders, long trousers for men, skirt below the knee for women. Wraps are usually available at the entrance.
April–June and September–October: mild weather, fewer people. In winter the mist gives magical views.
Free child seats and boosters. The viewpoints are reachable without any steps.

How long is the Meteora day trip from Thessaloniki?
The full day trip lasts about 11–12 hours door to door. Driving time is roughly 3 hours each way (about 240 km), plus 3–4 hours at the Meteora monasteries and a lunch stop in Kalambaka.
How much does a private transfer to Meteora cost?
Our private Meteora day trip starts from 600€ per vehicle (not per person) for a sedan with up to 3 passengers. Minivans for up to 7 passengers and minibuses for larger groups are quoted on request. Tolls, fuel and the driver's time are included.
How many monasteries can we visit in one day?
Six monasteries are still active and open to visitors. Realistically you can visit two or three in a day — each requires a walk and a climb of steps. Opening days rotate per season, so we plan the route with you the day before.
Is there a dress code for the monasteries?
Yes. Shoulders must be covered and men need long trousers; women need a skirt below the knee (wraps are usually available at the entrance). Comfortable shoes are essential — there are many steps.
Can we be picked up from a Halkidiki hotel or the airport?
Yes. We pick up from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), any Thessaloniki hotel, or a Halkidiki resort such as Sani, Ikos or Miraggio. Pickups from Halkidiki add driving time, so we usually start earlier and the price is adjusted to the distance.
Is it a guided tour?
It is a private transfer with an English-speaking driver, not a licensed guided tour. Your driver takes you to each viewpoint and monastery entrance and waits for you. A licensed local guide can be arranged in Kalambaka on request for an extra fee.
What is the best time of day to visit Meteora?
Early morning is best: the coach tours from Athens usually arrive after 11:00, so leaving Thessaloniki around 07:00 gives you the quietest monasteries and the clearest light for photos. Sunset from the Psaropetra or Great Meteoron viewpoints is the second-best moment.
Is the trip suitable for children or older travellers?
Yes. The drive is comfortable and we stop as often as you like; child seats are free. Monasteries do require climbing 100–300 steps each, but the panoramic viewpoints are reachable straight from the car park, so anyone can enjoy the landscape.
