Mount Athos from Thessaloniki Airport: Complete Ouranoupoli Guide

Mount Athos (Greek: Άγιον Όρος, "Holy Mountain") is the third peninsula of Halkidiki, and the only autonomous monastic state in the world. Twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries operate under Byzantine governance, and women are not permitted to enter (the Avaton tradition since 1046). Ouranoupoli is the gateway: the last secular village before the border, where all visitors board a ferry to enter Athos.

Diamonitirion — the entry permit (men only)

Every male visitor needs a Diamonitirion (entry permit). Apply online via the Pilgrims' Bureau (PIRGOS) of the Holy Community at least 2–6 months in advance — only 110 Orthodox + 10 non-Orthodox visitors are admitted per day. The permit costs €25 (Orthodox) or €35 (non-Orthodox) and is collected in person on the morning of your ferry. Bring your passport.

The ferry from Ouranoupoli

Two main ferries depart Ouranoupoli daily: at 09:45 and 11:00 (off-season may differ). The boat takes ~2 hours along the Athos coast, stopping at the small ports of each monastery. Day-trip cruises (without landing) are available for everyone, including women — boats keep the mandatory 500m offshore distance and you see the monasteries from the sea. Tickets €30–€40.

Where to stay in Ouranoupoli

Most pilgrims arrive the day before their ferry to be at the Pilgrims' Office by 7am. Top picks: Eagles Palace (5-star, beach, on the way into the village), Aristoteles Holiday Resort & Spa (4-star, family-run, walking distance to ferry), Skites Bungalows (boutique, sea-front). Budget rooms in the village center start from €50/night.

Getting from SKG Airport to Ouranoupoli

Ouranoupoli is approximately 145 km from Thessaloniki Airport SKG, around 2 hours 15 minutes by car. Public KTEL bus: 3–4 hours with one transfer in Ierissos, runs only twice daily — risky if you have an early-morning ferry the next day. Private transfer is the standard pilgrim choice — door-to-door from arrivals to your hotel in Ouranoupoli, fixed price, sedan or minivan for groups, English/Greek speaking driver. Book online and we'll have you at your hotel before sunset.
