Bansko is the most popular ski resort in the Balkans — and for most international visitors the journey starts at Thessaloniki Airport, which often has far more flights and better fares than Sofia in winter. The drive is about 230 km and takes roughly 2 hours 50 minutes, including the border crossing at Promachonas–Kulata. We take you from the arrivals hall straight to your hotel or apartment in Bansko for one fixed price per vehicle, agreed before you travel — no meters, no surprises at the border.

Private transfer from Thessaloniki Airport to Bansko

The border crossing, handled

The route crosses from Greece into Bulgaria at the Promachonas–Kulata checkpoint. Our drivers do this crossing every week of the ski season: they know the quiet hours, the documents you need (a valid passport or EU ID card) and how to keep the stop as short as possible. You stay in the car with your luggage while the formalities are handled. In peak season weekends the border can add 20–40 minutes — we plan the pickup time around it, so you never miss a flight because of a queue.

Winter-equipped vehicles

The last stretch from Razlog up to Bansko climbs into the Pirin mountains and can be snowy or icy from December to March. All vehicles on this route run on winter tyres and carry snow chains, and the drivers know the road in all conditions. Ski bags, snowboards and oversized luggage travel free — just declare them in the booking form so we send a vehicle with the right luggage space.

Why fly to Thessaloniki for Bansko

In winter, Thessaloniki (SKG) is served by direct flights from London, Manchester, Berlin, Vienna, Warsaw and many more cities — often at half the fare of Sofia. From SKG, Bansko is under three hours by road with one border crossing. Many of our winter guests combine both: a few days of skiing in Bansko and a night or two in Thessaloniki on the way back. Tell us your plan and we price the whole itinerary as one booking.

Groups, families and ski clubs

A minibus covers groups of 8 to 17 skiers with all their equipment in one vehicle, at one fixed price — usually far cheaper per person than two or three cars. Ski clubs and organised groups get a single pickup plan, one driver contact and one written confirmation covering both the outbound and the return. Send us the group size, the flight numbers and the equipment count and we confirm everything before you book.

Return transfer for an early flight

For the return, pickup time in Bansko is calculated so you reach the airport at least two hours before your flight, plus the full drive, a realistic border allowance and a winter-weather margin. The recommended pickup time is confirmed in writing before travel — for a 10:00 flight that typically means leaving Bansko around 05:00. If your flight is delayed or rescheduled, we adjust the plan at no extra cost.

What to know about Bansko

Bansko sits at the foot of the Pirin National Park, with about 75 km of pistes, a modern gondola from the town itself and a long season that usually runs from mid-December to mid-April. The old town is famous for its mehanas — traditional tavernas with fireplaces and local wine — and prices for food, lift passes and lessons are among the lowest of any major European resort. We drop you at your exact accommodation: hotel, apartment block or chalet, anywhere in town.

Airport pickup process

Give us your flight number when you book. We follow the flight and set the pickup to its actual arrival time. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall with a name sign, helps with the luggage and walks you to the vehicle in the short-stay car park a few steps from the terminal exit.

Flight delays & waiting time

We monitor the flight number provided with the booking and adjust the pickup to the flight's actual arrival. For airport pickups, up to 60 minutes of complimentary waiting time applies after the recorded landing time. Exceptional baggage delays or other issues should be reported immediately. Additional waiting may be charged according to the booking terms.

Standard luggage is included. Prams, golf bags, skis, wheelchairs and other oversized items must be declared in advance. Vehicle suitability depends on the combined number of passengers and luggage and must be confirmed before travel.

You can add your return journey during the same booking process. The complete price is shown before confirmation. Your driver confirms the pickup time the day before, based on your departure flight.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a transfer from Thessaloniki Airport to Bansko?

The price is fixed per vehicle, not per person, and is shown in the booking form before you pay — a sedan for up to 3 passengers or a minivan for families and small groups, with minibus options for larger parties. Tolls, border formalities, winter equipment and flight monitoring are all included; there are no extras at the end.

How long does the transfer take?

About 2 hours 50 minutes in normal conditions, including the border crossing at Promachonas–Kulata. On peak winter weekends the border can add 20–40 minutes, and heavy snow on the Razlog–Bansko stretch can slow the last section. We always plan with a realistic margin, especially when a flight is involved.

Do I need a passport for the border?

EU citizens can cross with a valid national ID card; everyone else needs a passport. Whatever your nationality, the document must be valid on the travel date — the border police check every passenger. Keep it handy, not in the boot, so the stop stays short.

Can you carry skis and snowboards?

Yes — ski bags, snowboards, boots and helmets travel free of charge. Declare the equipment count in the booking form and we send a vehicle with the right luggage space. For groups with full equipment, a minivan or minibus is usually the right choice.

Is the drive safe in snow and ice?

All vehicles on the Bansko route run on winter tyres and carry snow chains from December to March, and the drivers know the mountain section in all conditions. If the weather is severe enough to affect timing, we contact you in advance with a revised pickup time — safety first, schedule second.

Where does the driver meet us at the airport?

In the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name. We monitor your flight, so if it lands early or late the driver adjusts automatically — you never wait and never search. You receive the driver's name and phone number before landing.

Can we stop on the way — for food, shopping or sightseeing?

Yes. Popular stops include a coffee break in Serres, a photo stop at the Rupel Gorge, or a meal in a traditional mehana once in Bulgaria. Tell us what you have in mind when booking and we build the stop into the schedule and the fixed price.

Do you serve other Bulgarian ski resorts?

Yes — we also run transfers to Borovets and Pamporovo on request, as well as Sofia city. Send us your destination and dates through the booking form or by message and we confirm a fixed price before you commit.

What if our flight is delayed or cancelled?

We monitor the flight and adjust the pickup automatically — a delay costs you nothing. If the flight is cancelled and you rebook for another day, message us and we move the transfer to the new flight at no charge.

Can we book the return from Bansko at the same time?

Yes — most guests book both legs together. Enter your return flight details in the same booking and the system prices the round trip as one reservation, with one confirmation and one point of contact for both days.

Is Bansko suitable for beginners and families?

Very much so — the resort has wide beginner slopes at the top of the gondola, several English-speaking ski schools and dedicated children's areas. Child seats and boosters for the transfer are free: just tell us the children's ages in the booking form.

How do we pay?

Online by card when you book — the price you see is the price you pay. The booking is confirmed instantly and you receive a written confirmation with the pickup plan, the driver's details and the fixed price.

When does the ski season run in Bansko?

Usually from mid-December to mid-April, with the most reliable snow from January to early March. We run transfers on this route all winter, every day of the week, including Christmas, New Year and Greek and Bulgarian public holidays.
